Anaesthesia options:

Post discussion, your dentist will determine if your tooth is best extracted under local anaesthesia or general. Ensure you converse with your doctor and are briefed adequately.

Local anaesthesia:

In instance of a relatively uncomplicated surgery you will likely be given local anaesthetic, which is administered with a needle in order to numb your lower face and gums. This then allows them to begin extraction. A tablet may also be given to you for the purpose of relaxation.

General anaesthesia:

General anaesthesia - which is given by a specialising anesthetist, may be recommended in some instances. This will put you entirely to sleep for the surgery.

Instances this may be necessary:
  • In the case of more complicated surgeries or teeth that are of higher difficulty to extract.
  • Individuals who wish to not be awake throughout the procedure.
  • Those who have further issues with their wisdom teeth, gums or jaws.
  • People who require removal of multiple teeth vs just one.

Note:

If it is necessary for you to undergo surgery on general anaesthesia, refrain from eating or drinking anything.

If it is a morning procedure: do not consume any food or beverages from midnight onwards the night prior.

Full direction will be provided by the dentist/anaesthetist. Modern options are generally safe with very minimal risk. There is however a minority that may possess severe adverse reactions or effects of these drugs. If this has ever occurred for you, tell your dentist.

What your surgery involves:

During your surgery, the dentist will be required to make an incision in your gums, exposing the tooth for extraction. A slight bone portion may additionally need removal if necessary to allow access.

Incisions may require stitches to close them back up - which will either dissolve after a few days on their own, or in other types require removal by the dentist.

Once you have had your surgery you will be required to have some rest prior to beginning your journey home. The dentist will monitor you as you begin to recover. Once they are satisfied you have adequately done so you will be allowed to leave.

You will not be allowed to drive post surgery, hence it is advised to arrange for a friend or relative to bring you home. If the surgery was conducted in a hospital, you will return to your room after to recover.
